CREED III

What would you do if an old friend from your dreadful past got out of jail and showed up at your job? Not to mentioned he basically calls you a loser and forces you out of retirement. On the other hand, what if you spent the best years of your life cooped up in a cell watching the brother [brother means someone you consider a brother but it sounds like its because they’re black lol] who caused it all living your dream.

I’m a bit like Adonis in a way, but not really, my father was a boxer and my brother is a boxer, so we’re kind of alike…I see the similarities–boxing roots and all. To be fair, Creed isn’t a movie I would normally watch in theatres but I was invited by a friend, it was not disappointing though. Not so fun fact, I have not watched the previous Creeds, and if I have seen Rocky that was many many manyyyy moons ago.

Disclaimer: This review is solely based on this movie, I have no prior knowledge to draw from so that might also skew how I felt while watching the movie.

I like the opening as it sets the tone and gives enough background on everything that’s going to happen in the future. From that boy, Damian, showed him the gun in the earlier scene, I knew that it would be a key element to the plot. Why show a weapon if it’s not going to be used pretty soon? Foreshadowing, as the literature kids would say.

Personally, after everything I feel like the writing was a bit sloppy, a lot of loose ends here and there but that could simply be because I have no prior knowledge of what went down before. While not really important to the plot what was the point of mentioning his daughter beating a bully and Donnie needing to deal with it, and he never does. That is left unresolved unless it was and my memory is just foggy.

I feel bad for Dame, Donnie grew up, had an amazing boxer career, married the love of his life, had a child and the whole shebang, but life stopped for him when he went to jail. He never had a chance to grow, to live, to prove himself to the world. That hunger kept growing in him and he desperately needed to prove himself- he needed to regain the life he had lost. This is truly a testament to no good deed goes unpunished, imagine I did something to help you out and I ended up in jail and you’re free. You didn’t even visit or write me once. If this was a horror, Dame would stalk Donnie and destroy everything he loves before ultimately killing him.

I understand Dame’s desperation for a chance at his dream but the man nah have no morals (the man doesn’t have any morals) getting men to beat Drago is one thing but fighting dirty at your debut? He is so shameful and disappointing.

What I will agree with is that Donnie is a fraud and deserved to be slandered by Dame. How can we be brothers, grow together, have each other back and you just left me to rot in jail? Regardless of his mother hiding the letters, at no point when he was 18 or older he didn’t think to visit Dame? On principle alone he should get slapped. Unscrupulous.

Am I even talking about the movie at this point? Let’s get into a scene or a couple scenes I really enjoyed near the end when Donnie and Dame were training for the upcoming fight. This was good but the scene in the ring was great. Truly a masterpiece. There’s just something beautifully poetic* about how in the zone they were. That the crowds of roaring fans were completely drowned out, they didn’t exist. The only thing that’s real is them fighting in this moment. The lighting work in this scene is really good as well.

I don’t really go for a cheesy reconciliation moment in movies, books anything at all, I feel some characters are irredeemable and should remain so. However, choosing to have Donnie and Dame reconcile was a good choice, even though it was Donnie’s fault.

Michael B Jordan, always lovely to see you, I hope no more Creeds exist after this, at least not in the theatre, on BET or Starz Black surely the big screen, I think that can stay.

I wasn’t mad at this movie but I didn’t love/like it either. It was a decent enough watch on the day just not something I would recommend or say you HAVE to watch this. I must say the marketing for this was A1.

Thanks for reading! Mad was just at the movie, I wasn’t angry at the movie… for this one. See you next time to find out if/why I’m Mad At The Movie.
